Elsey National Park, located in the heart of the Northern Territory, 1.5kms South of Mataranka and offers a perfect escape for those looking to unwind in warm, crystal-clear thermal pools, immerse themselves in rich history, or enjoy a peaceful day of river fishing.
The tranquil Roper River winds its way through this stunning park, with convenient boat ramp access available at 4 Mile and 12 Mile. A place of cultural and historical significance, Elsey National Park was also the iconic setting for Jeannie Gunn’s classic Australian novel We of the Never Never.
Nature lovers can take the easy 1.5-kilometre Botanic Walk, a scenic loop showcasing the park’s diverse and fascinating plant life. For a longer adventure, the Riverside Walk offers an eight-kilometre return journey from Jalmurark Campground to Korowan (Mataranka Falls), where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of native bushland along the way.
While swimming is only recommended in designated thermal areas, the experience is truly unforgettable. The Mataranka Thermal Pool is one of the park’s standout attractions, fed by the Rainbow Spring which flows at a constant 33°C and 300 litres per second. Visitors can soak and relax in this naturally heated pool, surrounded by lush greenery.
Also not to be missed is Bitter Springs, a tropical oasis nestled in ancient rainforest. This popular spot invites you to gently float downstream in the warm waters—a favourite activity for both locals and travellers.
For those wanting to stay overnight, the spacious Jalmurark Campground offers a comfortable base to explore the park. Please note that bookings are essential and must be made online prior to arrival.
Due to seasonal weather conditions, Elsey National Park may be inaccessible from November to April due to flooding, so it's always best to plan ahead.
Whether you're chasing adventure or simply seeking serenity, Elsey National Park is a Top End treasure waiting to be explored.
